Celebrate Black History Month in the Big Apple
By NY Fab • February 4th, 2010
This is our history! Black History Month has already begun so you’re late. Reflect and celebrate all that African-Americans have done in this country by attending these great cultural events around the city.
- The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (70 Lincoln Center Plaza) is hosting many special events during the month of February in honor of Black History Month. Performances by Christian McBride, the Harlem Gospel Choir and Dee Dee Bridgewater (pictured) will be held so get your tickets today.
- The Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturdays, hosts free programs of art and entertainment each month from 5 to 11 p.m. and this month is no different. On Feb. 6., enjoy The Igmar Thomas Group, presented by Revive Da Live, a fusion of jazz and hip-hop. Or create your own wearable art inspired by Nick Cave’s Soundsuit. Don’t forget the dance party held from 9-11 p.m. with DJ Ian Friday, resident DJ of Libation at the Sullivan Room, who will host a Mardi Gras dance party.
- The City College of New York is hosting “Is Hip-Hop History?”, a two-day conference of scholars, performers, entrepreneurs, journalists and activists examining the state of the music genre, its subculture and future outlook. The Black History Month event is being held at the college’s Center for Worker Education (25 Broadway, 7th floor, in lower Manhattan), in conjunction with the center’s course “History, Culture and Politics of Hip-Hop.” Veejay Ralph McDaniels, creator of the pioneering “Video Music Box” music video show and Duke University professor Mark Anthony Neal are keynote speakers for day one and two of the conference, respectively. Feb. 19 and Feb. 20. Admission is $5 per day for students with a valid college I.D., $15 for one day or $25 for two days for the general public.
