NYC Get Ready: MTA Predicts Fare Increases in 2011
By NY Fab • February 4th, 2010
As if this last increase from $2.00 to $2.25 wasn’t enough, the NY Post is reporting that fares may skyrocket past the propsed 7.5% increase in 2011! I know everyone is probably cussin’ out the MTA in their heads, but in this case, those unkind words should be pointed towards state and government officials who “incorrectly” calculated how much tax revenue the agency would receive.
According to officials in Gov. Patterson’s administration,
“Part of a $2 billion bailout of the agency in 2009 — will bring in $400 million less than expected for the transit agency’s 2010 budget. That could cause the 7.5 percent fare hike already scheduled for 2011 to go even higher.”
Honestly, what is really going on here? I’ve always admired NYC’s MTA system in comparison to the DMV’s WMATA due to the fact that the train system in DC has fewer stops, charges various rates (pending your destination), and has consistent issues on the biggest line in the area (red). But now that the MTA may have to increase fares, and subsequently, implement service cuts, the transportation system that I have admired for so long will cause uncontrollable chaos in one of the busiest cities in the world! (yikes it scares me to even imagine what will happen).
“The drop is going to bring on rather egregious problems for the MTA,” according to Gov. Paterson at a press conference yesterday.

This is insane! Since I have a smartcard paid by my employer I never looked at what I was being charged. Someone pointed out to me the other day that rush hour fares within DC are now $1.80!!! I’m paying almost $2 in the city. It used to be $1.35 during rush hour.

On my last trip to NYC I brought some old NYC transit tickets I had. Come to find out they expired!!! How does a subway ticket expire? It has money on it! I was told to mail it to their main office to get my money back.
